What Is an AI Companion?

An AI companion is software that holds ongoing conversations with a persistent character. Here is what that means in practice, and where the limits are.

An AI companion is a conversational app built around a character that stays the same from one session to the next. You choose or create the character, talk to it in text (and sometimes voice or images), and the app is designed to make the relationship feel continuous.

What an AI companion does

Under the surface, a companion is a large language model that has been given a description of a character and, usually, a record of what you have talked about before. The model predicts a reply that fits both. The result can be warm, funny or playful, but it is generated text rather than the thoughts of a person.

  • Conversation that adapts to the character you chose or built.
  • Memory features that carry details from one chat into the next.
  • Optional media: generated images, voice replies, voice calls or video, depending on the platform.
  • Customisation of personality, appearance and sometimes backstory.

How it differs from a general assistant

A general assistant is designed to answer questions and complete tasks. A companion is designed around relationship and continuity: it keeps a persona, remembers your preferences and talks in a consistent voice. We expand on this in AI companion vs. chatbot.

Why people use them

People use companion apps for casual conversation, creative writing and roleplay, practising a language or social situation, or simply for company. None of these uses requires believing the character is a person, and it helps to keep that distinction in mind.

Limits and risks

  • Replies can be inaccurate or inconsistent, especially over long conversations.
  • Memory is limited. Older details can fade, and some platforms restrict memory to paid plans.
  • Spending can climb when images, voice or video are charged per use.
  • Conversations can include personal information, so data handling matters. See our privacy guide.
  • A companion is not a substitute for professional mental health support or for human relationships.

What to look for

Start with the formats you actually want, then compare how each platform handles memory, pricing and privacy. Our how to choose guide turns this into a checklist, and the AI companion comparison shows confirmed features side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Is an AI companion a real person?

No. It is software that generates replies. Some platforms add voice, images or video, but the character is still generated.

Do AI companions work offline?

Most rely on servers to generate replies, so they need an internet connection. Check each platform's description for specifics.
